I was on my way to film a wedding at Waimea Valley when I fell off my skateboard and chipped my two front teeth in half, in front of all of the guests waiting in line to board the bus that was going to take them to the ceremony location. I was so embarrassed. The violinist who was also working the same wedding as me, comes up to me and says “hey I think this is a piece of your tooth”. There it was, the other half laying on the sidewalk waiting for safe keeping. It was a terrible sight. Looking at myself in the wedding welcome mirror, I couldn’t believe I got by without even a scratch on my face. Just two broken teeth. I filmed the wedding with tears in my eyes thinking this was going to be my new look. “Do you think I can pull this off” I asked the sweet man working at Waimea who was helping me after my fall. My grandma later said this was part of my destiny.
Searching for a dentist that could see me immediately, my husband was drawn to Hawaii Cosmetic Dental, a dental clinic tucked away in the heart of Manoa Marketplace. Dr. Bogdan Rosala had awesome reviews, seemed personable and we were also drawn to the fact that he studied dentistry in Germany. Knowing my two front teeth are such a critical part of my facial feature and smile, we wanted someone who would put in the care to see me, over a clinic that had a factory style procedure.
Bogdan has the sweetest office assistant, Lisa, who answered my call right away. She explained to me that they were fully booked for the next couple of weeks, but if something opens up she will give me a call back. I continued hunting for other dentists, but was crossing my fingers Dr. Rosala would be able to take me, he was my number one choice!
I got lucky, and they were in fact able to see me right away! My first appointment was an x-ray for my front teeth and a filling for both. I was shocked after the procedure, you couldn’t tell where the crack was. Dr. Rosala did such an amazing job color matching the filling, his expertise really shined through. All my friends said the same thing, they couldn’t even tell I had chipped my teeth. He did want to bring me on as a client so he could monitor my teeth, and in order to do that I had to come in for another appointment which was a cleaning, a thorough exam of all teeth and a full x ray. He asked me why I didn’t just go to my usual dentist, and I explained that I just simply don’t trust my experience with my old dentist. I’ve never really had good experiences with dentists. Growing up my parents would only work on my teeth or their own teeth if they had the ability to make a trip to visit our family in Ukraine. But no trip to Ukraine meant no dentist for me and going to the dentist was never part of an every 6 month type of routinely check up.
What I really liked about Dr. Rosala was the way he took the time to explain everything to me. He explained his approach to fillings, crowns and root canals. He had such a gentle approach in his communication which I really liked, plus he’s hilarious too! I’ve been yelled at by a dentist in Ukraine, which was a terrible experience that tainted the act of going to the dentist. Dr. Rosala changed my perspective. After the second appointment, which was the cleaning and thorough exam of my teeth, I couldn’t believe my teeth! They have never been so clean! I’ve been going to my old dentist every 6 months for the last few years, but he has never been able to get rid of my stains. I thought - this was just the way it was. Dr. Rosala surprised me with a set of teeth that looked so clean they sparkled! Immediately I started telling my friends about this, I had no idea my teeth could look so good. The irony was that I had actually already received a cleaning by my old dentist a month prior to my visit to Hawaii Cosmetic Dental, but it never felt like it made an impact. Even Dr. Rosala was confused, “you said you got a cleaning a month ago?”. The truth is I feel like I’ve never had proper dental care, even though I tried with my old dentist, it just was not there.
After the thorough exam, Dr. Rosala found about 9 other teeth that were “OUT OF CONTROL” and needed to be worked on. I was ready to take on the mission. I couldn’t believe my old dentist never caught these issues. We locked in the procedures. Dr. Rosala explained to me that if I am planning to get pregnant soon, I need to fix my teeth. I need to take care of myself first, before I can take care of my baby. He explained to me how pregnancy amplifies teeth to get worse, and it’s really important to fix as many problems as possible before you get pregnant. Wow, I had no idea this was even something that I had to do before going into the next phase of life. If I didn’t have my fall, I would have never gotten my teeth looked at, I would have never uncovered these issues that needed to be fixed. It was all meant to happen and a blessing in disguise.
I continued to see Dr. Rosala throughout the entire month of May and into June. It actually became something I really looked forward to. Dr. Rosala and the entire team at the clinic were so nice to me. My favorite part about Dr. Rosala is his warm friendly energy. He has funny jokes and can easily lighten the mood with some humor. He also feels very familiar, as if he’s been a family friend all my life, so I felt very comfortable with him, which was super important.
From the first day in the dentist chair to the last, I also felt like I experienced some character growth. I hated the sound of the dentist tools and would flinch and feel un eased at first. By the last day I handled any discomfort like a true champ meditating my way through the process. “Keep meditating” Dr. Rosala said. I grew to understand that I had to be as calm as possible so Dr. Rosala and his assistant could do a good job. I worked on not being bothered by the noise. I truly felt like I was in the arms of angels with Dr. Rosala and his dental assistant helping me with all my teeth! They are experts in their craft!
Dr. Rosala also explained to me the importance of flossing, and I’ve been flossing every day since! Thank you dearly to Dr. Rosala and his entire team for taking care of my teeth! I am looking forward to seeing you guys for many, many years to come! If anyone is looking for a dentist, Hawaii Cosmetic Dental is the best! I feel so lucky to have stumbled my way into the clinic!
